Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Stake Hill (3)

This second evening I arrived a bit later, about 18.00 and again fished through to dusk (21.30). It was colder than the previous evening and although the breeze was again into the corner (I fished the same spot) I think it was chilling the water this time. The water temperature, while still warmish, didn't feel quite as high as the day before.

I again waggler fished bread flake and pre-baited with sweet corn, small pellets and rolled bread pellets, and continued to feed.

Things were slower this evening and I had to wait until about 18.30 for my first fish; a 1¼lb common carp. This was followed about half an hour later by a small tench of about 4oz; the only one this evening, which may have been because of the drop in water temperature.

The remaining fish were all carp, the largest being 3lb 3oz.

I asked the owner what size the carp reached, and he said that people had reported 5lb fish, but he sounded a bit sceptical. It may be, therefore, that a 3lb+ fish was quite good for this water.

The carp ranged from 1lb 14oz to the 3lb 3oz fish; 4 mirrors, 2 commons and a leather. With the tench this made 8 fish in all.

A less productive and colder evening, but the average fish size was much higher. The carp really did fight well for their size.
