Diary of an average angler

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

End of year review 2024

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Last year it was my back, and this year a replacement left hip in February delayed my fishing until the end of April.

It was, as usual, a year of mixed fortunes, with some good days and others where I struggled. In this year's review video I have opted not to include a selection of video clips, in order to keep the review quite short. I have instead summarised where I went and what I caught with a voice-over commentary and a selection of photographs from the sessions.

New left hip

I've not been very visible of late and those of you who watched my 2023 review and Christmas message will know that I was suffering from a very painful left hip. The good news is that I had the hip replaced just over two weeks ago and I'm now anxiously looking forward to when I'll be able to get out fishing again, but it will probably be a least a couple of months.
More information in the above short video update.

Merry Christmas

And a review of 2023

It was a late start to the year after a back operation in February and I didn't manage to do as much river fishing as I would have liked. And unfortunately I didn't have great success when I did manage to get to the rivers. But a few decent fish came my way before a worsening problem with my left hip grounded me. This review includes a clips from some of my trips.

I shall be seeking medical advice for the hip although it is looking very much as if I shall need a hip replacement. I had my right hip replaced in 2021 at which time the consultant advised me that the left hip was also worn, and it seems that it has now reached the point where surgery may be required.

After three very uncomfortable months with lots of pain I had back surgery on 22 February, which I'm pleased to say has cured most of the problems.

I still have some numbness in the left leg but it has eased a bit since the surgery and I'm hopeful that it will go away after a few more weeks.

As things stand I'll definitely miss the end of this river season but am hopeful that I will be able to get to a lake in April.

I have a review with the surgeon at the end of March that will inform me as to when fishing can safely recommence.

I'm laid up with a back problem.
Check here for updates.

What I thought to be an old back problem has turned out to be a bit more serious!
After attending A&E it transpires that I have three dodgy discs in the lower back.
This has resulted in a lot of pain and has grounded me.
Having seen a neurosurgeon on 2 February I'm hopeful that I will have an operation during February to relieve the compressed discs, and hopefully this will get me back out fishing.
Although I think I'm going to miss the rest of this season.
