Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Houghton Meadows

A stroll along the Trout Stream

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Having regained enough strength in my replacement left hip, I can now 'officially' drive, although it's a bit of a technicality as I have an automatic!
With improving weather, I took a trip to Houghton Meadows and walked along the Trout Stream, returning by way of a back channel of the Ouse. Both looked very inviting!
So I'm not fishing yet, but sometimes just looking is enough.

Exploring Houghton

A walk along The Trout Stream & Ouse back stream

A close season stroll along a back stream of the Ouse and the Trout Stream, checking out parts that I hadn't visited before and others that I had. Swims I had fished in the winter were already looking quite different as the vegetation starts to take hold and it's likely that in places access will be quite difficult in the summer. An hour or so well spent.

Exploring the Clay Pit

A walk around the Clay Pit

With river levels up and the wind still very blustery I decided to take a walk around the Clay Pit. I never do very well on lakes in the winter so I left the tackle at home.
With the weather now settling down a bit I hope my next outing will involve some fishing!

Exploring River Great Ouse

A walk along Dolphin Meadow

A walk along the Gt Ouse at Hemingford Grey Meadow (Dolphin Meadow) with the river high and Storm Franklin still making its presence well and truly felt.
Some interesting spots to check out in the future when the river has returned to normal.

Exploring OBAS waters

Offord

I have a ticket for the Offord & Buckden AS club and as I'm still not able to fish I decided to explore a section of its waters that I hadn't looked at previously. I also checked out areas that I had fished which proved to be quite frustrating as conditions appeared ideal. I yearn for the day when my hip recovery is such that I can again sit and fish by a river.

Exploring a new stream

Trout Stream - Houghton

Having recovered sufficiently from my recent hip replacement, and been given permission to drive by the consultant, I set off to check out a small fairly local stream. It turned out to be very challenging and certainly not something I could take on until I'm much fitter.
I made a couple of mistakes in my commentary. It is Meadow Lane and not Mill Lane. And the angling club is Houghton Wyton & Hemingford, not Huntingdon.
