Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

River Great Ouse - Offord (4)

Mill Stream

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Bright with a bit of chill in the breeze. Warmer later.
Tackle: 11ft Masterline 'John Wilson' Avon, 2oz quiver, link leger, 5lb line, 12 hook
Baits: Spam and bread flake.
Fish: Four chub best around 1¼lb. Lost two better fish.

After videoing my trip to the Chubb Stream I again set out to video this outing. I headed for the swim just below the weir outflow where I've fished previously with the hope of a quick fish. But it wasn't to be and I waited a quarter of an hour before taking a small chub of around ¾lb. I had left the video running and captured the bite and the landing of the fish.

Things then went very quiet. I was out of the sun and in the fresh breeze started to get a bit chilly. I decided, therefore, to take my rod and landing net and try a couple of the more overgrown spots that were in the sun! Casting to a run between the rushes I soon got a take and a good fish was on. Unfortunately it either slipped the hook or transferred it to a reed stem. But I had got it to the surface and it was a sizeable fish. I decided to move all my gear up to this part of the stream.

After settling in I did manage to take a smaller chub of probably no more than a pound.

There was another spot a little way down stream that looked interesting and, sure enough, having flicked the spam cube close to overhanging branches I got a positive take no sooner had the bait settled. It felt like another good fish but this time I didn't see it before it made the rushes and transferred the hook onto one of the bulrush stems.

At this point I decided that next visit I would bring a more powerful rod with stronger line as in these two swims you need to keep the the fish away from the vegetation. I'm hopeful that either of these swims could produce a bigger fish than I've managed to catch to date at this venue.

After a while I did manage to take a small chub, again around a pound.

At this point as the time to pack up was approaching I decided to try the bridge pool on the way back to the car park. It didn't take long to get a bite and once again it was a smallish chub of around 1-1¼lb. But at least I ended the trip with a fish.
