Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Fields End (6)

Fourth time this year - really 'hooked'.

The day started chilly and damp - but quiet as there were very few people and cars were banned from the bank because of recent heavy rain. It got out brighter about 1.00 pm and warmed up considerably by the end of the day.

Same spot, but things were really quiet. Missed one good pull before getting the first carp (2lb 11oz) at 9.00 am. The carp didn't feed well off the top all day, but I did spot a couple around 10.0 am. Caught a really good looking 8lb fish on floating crust, followed by a smaller one of 4lb. Nothing else off the top all day!

Had five fish in all:

Mirror (2lb 11oz) - legered bread flake [09.00]
Mirror (8lb 0oz) - floating crust [10.30]
Mirror (4lb 0oz) - floating crust [11.00]
Mirror (5lb 4oz) - legered luncheon meat [14.30]
Mirror (6lb 6oz) - legered bread flake [19.15]

The first three fish were taken on a lighter rod with 8lb line - good fun.

Spoke to a chap who was staying in the camper park, who had fished the swim a lot. He said there were a wide range of species, including good crucians: perhaps next time I should try some lighter tackle and see what I get.

Nobody seemed to do exceptionally well, especially off the top. Perhaps all the earlier rain had chilled the water.
