Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Fields End (4)

Well, I remembered the camera this time!

The weather was perfect but the day started slowly. Apparently there had been a match on the Sunday and a lot of bait was thrown in, leaving the fish rather full.

I fished the same swim as on the 19th.

Takes were poor around the lake and I think I did as well as, if not better than most people. I employed free lining throughout the day but varied both bait and approach to get results: some bottom fishing and some floating bait.

While I didn't match the biggest fish of my earlier visit numbers were up (all fish were weighed).

The largest fish (7lb 10oz) was actually foul-hooked in the tail. I'm not sure whether this happened on the strike, or whether it freed the hook when it went into the reeds and became foul-hooked as it swam off; the take (off the surface) appeared clean. The 6lb 4oz Mirror taken on biscuit was also foul-hooked, this time in the pectoral fin. Again it was off the top, so it might be that in both cases I actually missed the take and hooked them as they shied away. To end the day I was broken by a large fish hooked in the margins. It tried to run into the reeds and I tried to stop it; unsuccessfully!
