Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Fields End (31)

Back to the reed swim. A bright and chilly start (7ºC) with a southerly breeze.

Things again kicked off quickly with a 3½lb tench on float-fished flake. The tench always fight hard to get back into the reeds whereas some carp head out into the lake. Twenty minutes later a 6lb common was taken using the same tactics.

Things then slowed down a bit so I went after a carp in the margins using floating crust, and was promptly broken.

On a previous visit a chap had mentioned that cheese worked well, so I gave it a try free-lining. I was rewarded wit a nice 3¼lb tench. The breeze proved a bit troublesome for free-lining so a switched to a light leger and took another tench of 2lb on cheese.

Things went quiet so I reverted to float and flake after lunch and took a crucian of 1½lb. Somewhat later a 5lb 2oz common took flake on float and then I was broken fishing luncheon meat on float. A 2½lb tench followed on luncheon meat. At this point (about 17.30) I went back to a light leger with luncheon meat and got an almost immediate take that resulted in an 8¼lb leather.

I continued legering luncheon meat and at 6.10pm caught another nice leather of 11¼lb.

Following this I was broken by a large fish and in consolation took two more carp on luncheon meat, a 7¾lb common and a 6lb mirror.

The other highlight of the day was a pair of mallards with their 11 chicks that swam carefree just in front of me.
