Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Fields End (25)

Tuesday's session was so successful I returned to the same spot with the same rig (float tackle).

I arrived at 07.00 and didn't have a touch on bread or sweetcorn. Changing to luncheon meat I got a bite first cast; a 10lb 6oz leather carp [09.00]. I then had to wait until 13.00 for my next bite, but again it was worth waiting for; a 10lb 12oz mirror carp on luncheon meat.

Things then started to get very interesting as I continued to catch throughout the afternoon, the amazing thing being the average size of the fish.

Having already caught the two 10lb plus fish, I then landed the following:

8lb 4oz - luncheon meat [13.45]
10lb 2oz - luncheon meat [15.00]
10lb 6oz- flake [16.15]
8lb 2oz - flake [17.50]

The last of these was landed at about 17.30 and conscious of the short twilight at this time of year I decided to have just one more cast before packing up. The bait hadn't been in for half a minute when the float disappeared and I struck into a large fish, which after 15-20 minutes of careful playing was landed. It was a plump mirror carp that weighed in at 18lb 2oz - flake [17.50].

It was just smaller than the 19lb fish I caught last year, but was much more memorable as I was again using the Avon rod with a 4lb hook length and the reeds either side of the swim gave me little room for error.

Fortunately all the fish headed out into the lake when hooked rather than into the reeds, although I did on a number of occasions need to turn them from the reeds while playing them in.

In terms of average fish size this must rate as the best day ever.
