Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Fields End (11)

Another afternoon visit. Arrived at noon and only four people on the lake. It had been raining and still threatened more rain, which probably kept people away.

Went to the tree swim again, although the light (and cold) north easterly wind was blowing right in my face; which was even more unpleasant when it rained later in the afternoon.

Fished the margin again and was soon getting bites. These proved to be tench but I was missing so many! I lost one fish (hook hold failed) and 'felt' a few others, but managed to land three tench during the day. Only the last one was weighed at 3lb 4oz although the first two were probably between 2lb and 3lb. All were taken on bread flake.

Canada Geese & Family

There were obviously carp in the swim as the tell-tale movement of the reeds indicated. This was proved by the fact I managed to foul-hook two fish during the afternoon. The second, a 6lb mirror was a nice fish but I can't really claim credit for catching it.

The Canada Geese were out with their chicks and a chaffinch almost landed on my foot at one point.

At the end of the day a carp rose to take a morsel of something literally right under my feet; just off the fishing platform. I retrieved my flake and placed a piece of crust where the fish had risen. Bingo, within a couple of minutes he returned and took the crust in a full-blooded lunge. I hooked him and played him for about a minute; then, as you might of guessed, the hook-hold failed. I do seem to be having problems lately with hooking fish properly. This was a rather disappointing end to the day.
