Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Fields End (102)

Again the lake was quiet with the holiday park closed. Only four people when I arrived, meaning I could get my 'spot' again.

I free lined bread to start with but this time I had to wait a bit before the first take at 09.20. A fully scaled fish of 7lb 5oz (photo). I spotted that the carp were taking off the top and 20 minutes later took one on crust. A mirror of 8lb 10oz that was in very poor condition.

Then as I cast the line came off my reel in a proverbial 'birds nest', which took me around 15 minutes to sort out while I watched carp surface feeding almost under my feet!

It was then a while (10.45) before another fish took a piece of crust but it soon became apparent that it was foul-hooked near the tai. It was only around 4/5lb but as usual with foul-hooked fish it was tricky to get in.

Things then when quiet and around midday I changed to the float rod with the hope of repeating the roach catch of last week, but the roach weren't obliging. Instead I was quickly into a mirror carp of around 6lb that took a while to get in on my match rod. This was repeated at 12.25 with a 7lb 10oz mirror, both fish taken on a small piece of luncheon meat.

I reverted to the compact float road with a free line and took four more carp, all on crust. The first, at 13.20, was a mirror of around 7lb that took the crust as it sunk. It appeared that it might have been in spawn by its bulging lower body so was quickly returned. At 14.45 I took a leather of around 5lb.

The final two fish were taken at 15.45 and 16.15, a mirror of 8lb 13oz (largest of the day - photo) and a leather of 7lb 13oz.

I had planned to pack up at 16.00 so that was my last fish. The evening was looking very promising with the carp clearly starting to forage around the margins as I packed up. But in line with my new philosophy, I stuck to my plan and made my way home.

One other highlight of the day was watching two moorhens having a right ding-dong over a period of more than an hour. I took a photo but the camera telephoto wasn't that great. But you'll get the idea!
