Once again the rivers were flooded so I decided to go to the Clay Pit as it was local. I had bought maggots having not done very well back in November on sweetcorn. I was alone bar a couple of hardy carp anglers on the main lake. I immediately became a bit concerned when I saw how clear the water was in the pond. This can be an indication of lack of aquatic activity, and so it was to prove!
I lightly pre-baited with maggots and sat down to see what would come along. To put it bluntly, nothing! Not a small rudd or perch, not a tremor on the float.
I stuck at it taking in the glorious if cold conditions. Winter sun and the browns of winter vegetation. But as for fish, not a sign.
Sitting still with nothing to stir the blood soon becomes a bit deflating. I was willing the float to do something but it didn't oblige.
I had originally planned to fish until 2.00pm but by midday I had revised that to 1.00pm.
And so that was it. Three hours of very fresh air and forlorn hope that came to nothing.
But if one doesn't try one will never know, that being what fishing is all about.
