Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

The Chubb Stream (20)

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Arrival time: 09.30.
Weather: cloudy and drizzly start but becoming sunny and very warm. Extremely humid.
Tackle: 11'6" John Wilson Avon with 1.5oz quiver, Shimano ST2500FB baitrunner, 6lb line direct to 8 hook.
Baits: bread flake & cheese paste.
Fish: 3 small chub.

After a couple of sessions on still water I decided to try a few hours on the Chubb Stream, after chub of course. We had had recent rain and there was a bit of extra water in the stream, but although it had a good flow it remained very clear. I walked to a favourite spot in the second meadow and was proposing to then fish another couple of swims at the end of the meadow before making my way back upstream. The banks were more accessible than on my previous visit in June but there remained only a few spots that were truly accessible.

The favourite spot was really tricky to fish with tree branches making a cast under the tree very difficult with rushes ready to impede the line after the cast. With bread flake on the hook I felt a couple of knocks through the rod but didn't see a bite. So I was surprised when I had a fish on as I retrieved. It was a small chub and despite its size fought to reach both the midstream rushes and the near bank vegetation. Fortunately it was small enough to swing. The blank was avoided but I couldn't tempt another from the swim.

Moving downstream to the end of the meadow I tried a cast under a raft that had built up against an overhanging bush. I had caught in the spot before but it wasn't to be on this occasion. I did however see a small perch following my bread on a retrieve.

I then moved to the other side of the bush to a swim where again I had caught in the past. And after a few casts exploring the swim I hooked another small chub that was a bit bigger than the previous one and gave a good account of itself. I stayed on for a while casting further down stream but nothing else materialised.

I now walked back upstream stopping off at a bay near the bypass where I had caught a good chub in June. Once again the swim was difficult with rushes ready to interfere with the line after casting. I had a few casts towards the raft where I had caught the June fish but on this occasion there was nothing doing.

Moving to the other side of the bypass I fished by casting downstream alongside a dense overhanging bramble bush that ensured that any chub wouldn't have sight of me. I had a few jabs and one good pull that I missed. Moving upstream a short way gave me a better view of where I was casting. Changing to cheese paste I tried a few casts and on one retrieve I again had a fish on without having seen or felt a bite. Another small chub probably between the first and second in size. I remained a bit longer but nothing else obliged.

My final stop was below the bridge at the start of the stretch. I had hooked and lost a fish there in the past but on this occasion the water was very shallow and fast, and crystal clear. I wasn't hopeful but tried a couple of casts into a spot where a fast channel opened out into a slightly wider and quieter area. But there wasn't any cover and I must have been visible, so it wasn't really a surprise when I didn't get anything. And that was it for the session.

In the end I got my target species but couldn't tempt a bigger fish. But it's a tough stream to fish and I wasn't too disappointed.
