This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

The Chubb Stream (15)

Arrival time: 9.00 am
Weather: Warm and humid becoming very hot by midday.
Tackle: Korum 10ft 'All Rounder' 1.1lb TC, Shimano ST2500FB baitrunner, single SSG link, 6lb line to 6 eyed hook.
Baits: Bread flake, luncheon meat & cheese paste.
Fish: One chub

I had stated in my sign off at the Mill Stream the previous week that I wouldn't be going to the Chubb Stream because of the dense vegetation on the banks. But having viewed a video on a channel I follow, subtitled ''Jungle Warfare" because of the challenge getting to the stream, I decided that perhaps I should give the Chubb Stream a go. As it turned out there were spots that were just fishable but it was still a challenge, not helped by clear water and bright sunshine.

Weather: Cloudy start. Sunny & warm following brief rain shower. Light breeze.
Tackle: 11'6" John Wilson Avon with 1.5oz quiver, Shimano 5000 RE reel, 6lb line direct to 6 eyed hook.
Baits: Bread flake & cheese paste.
Fish: One chub & one chublet. Another chub lost.

My first trip to a stream this season. There were only two cars in the car park when I arrived so I was hopeful that the mill stream would be free, as it turned out to be. Despite another carp having been reported from the car park pool there was only one bivvy there on this occasion but it is now on the map as a carp venue and I'm sure it will continue to attract the bivvy club.

The Clay Pit (18)

Arrival time: 08.50
Weather: After a very hot spell, chilly with occasional sun and windy.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Allcocks 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 10/12 eyed hook.
Baits: Maggots, bread flake, spam.
Fish: Two tench and one small rudd.

After a scorching hot beginning to the week I decided to go over to the Clay Pit as I didn't fancy too much walking, thinking it would still be quite warm. In fact it was really chilly with a fresh wind. It was my first visit to the Clay Pit this year as the lake was closed for spawning until just before the opening of the river season. I've had fairly consistent success on the small side pond in the past but on this occasion it was really challenging. I hadn't had a positive bite in the first three hours.

Arrival time: 10.00
Weather: Bright sun and very warm with increasing cloud but little wind.
Tackle: 14ft Shimano match rod, Rapidex II 2400 centrepin, 6lb line, 4lb pre-tied Drennan hook length to 14 fine wire hook.
Baits: Maggots with hempseed attractor.
Fish: 3 small roach and 2 small perch.

I was full of hope for the first trip of the new season, with a clear plan of action, but it didn't go that well. I had decided to fish a swim on the Top Stream that I had eyed-up on previous visits. It can be affected badly by wind but with very little wind forecast this seemed an ideal opportunity. It is also secluded and away from the nearby public footpath, so everything looked good. With very little flow I had decided to try laying on with maggots, my target species being roach and perch. But it wasn't to be. A small roach slipped the hook early on but after that, besides a few half-bites, there was nothing happening.

Weather: Overcast with hardly any wind and rain forecast.
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Allcocks 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line direct to 10 eyed hook.
Baits: White bread flake & spam.
Fish: 8 bream, a crucian & a crucian hybrid + a lost carp.

I've been alternating between Earith and Fields End since getting fishing again this spring, my other normal choice of venue, the Clay Pit, being closed for spawning. Today I was back at Earith and once again hoping for some tench. Things didn't start well when I discovered that I hadn't replaced the SD memory card in my head-cam, thus requiring me to improvise filming using my iPhone and a camcorder. When I eventually got set up my first hooked fish was almost certainly a largish carp that tore off into a large bed of lilies, leaving me attached to a lily stem. I got everything back but it wasn't a great start. I had switched from bread flake to spam which had it seems tempted the carp.

Weather: Overcast with a strengthening south-westerly breeze (from behind me).
Tackle: Hardy 11' 6" Marksman Specimen Avon, Allcocks 4" centrepin, preloaded waggler, 6lb line to a 10 eyed hook.
Baits: Breadflake & luncheon meat
Fish: Rudd & roach throughout the session with 3 crucians and a small perch.

Today's choice of venue was decided by the forecast for a strengthening SW wind. I would have preferred to return to Earith but the part of the lake that is accessible would have been exposed to the wind, which wouldn't have been great for waggler fishing. So I went to Fields End hoping to get the swim in the SW corner, which I did. In fact the lake was deserted, mine still being the only car in the visitors' parking when I left. And only a couple of anglers arrived from the on-site caravan park. So it was a very peaceful day.
