Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Red Letter Day present

An introduction to fly fishing

Helen bought me a Red Letter Day experience for wet fly fishing.

It was on a private lake near Winchester. The water was gin clear and it was a very hot June day.

Much of the day was devoted to instruction, both verbal and practical. I joined a novices group as I had had no real previous experience with a fly rod, but in the event I found I was quite adept, causing the instructor to say I was perhaps in the wrong group. Years of handling fishing rods obviously helped.

When it came to the actual fishing it appears that the lake on the day was well below par. My casting was good but I lost a fish early on because I was a bit too forceful. After that it was difficult to get another take but I finally managed to land a rainbow trout.
