Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

The Chubb Stream (7)

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Arrival time: 09.50
Weather: Overcast but very mild for February.
Tackle: 10ft Fishtec Compact Float, link leger, 6lb line.
Baits: Bread flake & Cheese paste.
Fish: Two chub

A return to the Chubb Stream after quite a long break. The stream was heavily coloured and at first I thought it was running high, but in fact the level was quite low.

My first trip to a river since 17 December because of a combination of repeated flooding and the restrictions of the latest Covid lockdown.

Chub Red Letter Day

A special day on the Welland

As I'm unable to get to the riverbank because of the current lock-down, rather than the usual video here I relive a rather special day using photographs taken at the time.
It was June 2014 and I enjoyed an exceptional day on the River Welland at Stamford, taking ten fish to 5lb 2oz, eight of which were from the same swim.
It's also good to remind ourselves of summer as we watch the snow outside and the flooded rivers.

The Stream

A fishing story

With the river too far away to qualify as 'local' under the present Covid restrictions, and a trip this week to a nearby commercial proving to be very difficult in the cold weather, I've decided to share a fishing story as an alternative to a filmed session. I enjoy reading the exploits of other anglers and hope you will find this little tale interesting enough that I can perhaps publish some more in the future.

River Great Ouse - Offord (10)

Sismey Island

Arrival time: 10.00
Weather: Overcast and very breezy but not too cold. A bit of weak sun later in the day.
Tackle: 11' 6" Hardy Marksman Specimen Avon, link leger/feeder, 8lb line.
Baits: Cheese paste.
Fish: Two chub

I've been suffering a bit from what I suspect is a pulled tendon in my thigh and this has made walking a bit difficult. So it was with a bit of trepidation that I set off today. But fortunately it didn't bother me too much, although it certainly slowed my progress.

The Chubb Stream (5)

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Arrival time: 09.30
Weather: Beautiful autumn day. Mild and no wind. Perfect.
Tackle: 10ft Fishtec Compact Float, link leger, 6lb line.
Baits: Cheese paste.
Fish: Two chub

I had had a look at the stream at the end of the previous week and was encouraged by the fact that the level was up, creating some more attractive glides and slacks. But when I arrived to fish the level had dropped considerably. This ruled out some swims.

River Great Ouse - Offord (9)

Mill Stream

Arrival time: 09.00
Weather: Breezy with a bit of light drizzle.
Tackle: 10ft Fishtec Compact Float, link leger, 6lb line.
Baits: Fox Spikey lure. Cheese paste.
Fish: One chub

After limited success with chub recently, today I decided to try lure fishing for perch. Unfortunately this was less successful than my efforts after chub. But it was an interesting diversion.
