Diary of an average angler

Who favours traditional methods & baits

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

Kilnsey (1)

For our summer break in 2009 we were staying in a farm house at Cringles, which is on high ground between Addingham and Silsden and not far from the Stake Hill Fishery.

We went to Kilnsey Park Trout Farm where I was able to hire a rod and enjoyed a few hours of somewhat amateurish fly fishing.

However, I was good enough to pick up one nice rainbow trout that I guess was somewhere between 2 & 3lb.

Rainbow

A nice rainbow

A couple of more accomplished anglers gave me some tips, and some lures. One of them, as he was leaving, showed us a fantastic 14lb fish he had caught earlier. I've never seen such a big rainbow, and was surprised to learn that they grow to 20lb plus. The lakes hardly seemed large enough to support such fish.

Unfortunately, despite one more take that I missed, I only had the one fish, but it was an enjoyable day.
