Diary of an average angler

fisherman

This diary dates back to a holiday in 2003 when I think the urge to get back into fishing took off. From around 2007 the trips became more frequent with 2010/11 probably being the peak of activity.
Things again pick up in 2020 - a sort of rebirth!

River Great Ouse - Offord (18)

The Triangle

You can view the video on this page or open YouTube by clicking the YouTube icon above.

Arrival time: circa 11.15 at swim
Weather: Overcast with a cold NE wind.
Tackle: John Wilson Avon Quiver with 1.5oz quiver, cage feeder and later a small cube leger weight, 6lb line direct to 8 hook.
Baits: Bread flake
Fish: One chub

I returned to the point of the Triangle at Offord Cluny having blanked twice previously at this spot. But I had lost a fish on the first occasion and this was another attempt to tempt a chub.

Conditions weren't as favourable as I had hoped. The river was up and coloured, and the flow was stronger than when I had lost a fish on a previous occasion.

I prebaited with mashed bread and today used a small cage feeder with liquidised bread. I fished the crease between the main flow and the outflow from the lock channel but it was soon apparent that this crease was far more turbulent on this occasion.

An unintentional short cast placed the bait not far from the dying reeds at the point. I decided to leave it be, which turned out to be a good decision as a positive bite rewarded me with a hooked fish. The chub fought to get into the reeds but once muscled clear it came in quite easily. At just over 2lb it wasn't a massive fish but was very welcome on what was a tough day.

Over the next hour I had two or three more bites but they weren't as positive as the first bite and I didn't manage to connect. I swapped to a leger after I had used all the liquidised bread.

I had intended to stay to around 3.00pm but between 1.00pm and 2.00pm I didn't have a touch, and being in a very exposed spot I was getting very cold in the NE wind. So I decided to pack up at 2.00pm.

It wasn't the most pleasant of conditions, and the river was running high and fast, but I was pleased that I managed to take that single chub. I had been disappointed losing a fish when I first fished the swim and wanted to have another crack at it.
